If you’re looking for a powerful new pickup truck in the Denver area, you’ve come to the right place! At Transwest GMC, we’re proud to offer a full inventory of Buick and GMC vehicles, including SUVs, sedans, pickup trucks, and hybrids. One of the best pickups you can find right now is the GMC Sierra, which is available either as a light-duty (1500) or heavy-duty (2500) variant. These are both great trucks, but which one best suits your lifestyle: GMC Sierra 1500 or 2500? Transwest GMC is here to help you make an informed decision – we’ve put together a guide outlining the difference between the GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500 below.
When deciding between the GMC Sierra 1500 or 2500, one of the first things you’ll want to look at is the price. The GMC Sierra 1500 is classified as a light-duty pickup truck, while the Sierra 2500 is part of the heavy-duty lineup that also includes the top-level Sierra 3500. As such, the Sierra 1500 is more affordable by about $5,000 (for the entry-level trim) than the Sierra 2500. In addition to being more affordable, the Sierra 1500 also comes in eight available trims, compared to the five in the Sierra 2500. Here are the starting prices for both trucks:
In addition to more trim levels, the GMC Sierra 1500 also comes with more engine options than its heavy-duty counterparts. You can pick from two available engines if you go for the Sierra 2500, and four available engines for the Sierra 1500. However, if you want top-level horsepower and torque, you’ll need to choose the 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, which only comes with the GMC Sierra 2500. Here are all the engine specs for both trucks:

Both the GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500 boast powerful towing capabilities, but the heavy-duty Sierra 2500 ultimately has the edge. Here are the minimum and maximum towing numbers for both models:
